ABOUT THE LIFE WORK OF DON SHREVES:
I have been asked by Don Shreve's family to sell these paintings which have been in the basement of his self-designed home in Joshua Tree, California. 97-year old Rollie ideally wants me to get the paintings to auction but after contacting many auction houses they all told me they can't work with him because he is not a "listed artist". We are now putting the works on ebay, much to the delight of some very enthusiastic fans of Shreve's work. Our plan is to offer 12 every 10 days for auction on ebay.
I am pleased to present this beautiful collection of one man's life work in paintings to a bigger audience. They have received a lot of attention and appreciation at Art Queen Gallery in Joshua Tree, California, where I showed them for most of 2012. I have been collecting an email list of folks interested in hearing our updates about the collection.
Here are some words from a brochure about Don Shreves from the 1970s.
"Don Shreves received his most important art training in Los Angeles with Lawrence Murphy, Will Foster, Herbert Jepson, Rico Lebrun, Robert Frame and Sergei Bongart. He also studied in Denver and Chicago and attended workshops at the Grande Chaumier in Paris and the Instituto in San Meguel De Allende, Mexico.
After covering Mexico from one end to the other by car, Don considered the area within a 210 mile radius of Guadalajara to be most ideal for painting so he returned on four separate occasions using the city as his home base while he filmed, sketched and painted this most colorful area. Although Shreve's subject matter varies greatly, he is perhaps best known for his highly personal interpretations from imagination and memory of this vicinity.
Shreves has earned his highest honors from some of the most prominent artists in California. For example, in 1961, internationally known watercolorist-author Rex Brandt judged him top prize winner in the challenging $500 Fallbrook competition. In 1963, famed western artist, Burt Procter, who received national recognition in the December 1976 issue of the American Artist magazine selected Don winner of the $300 Directors' Golden Palette Award resulting in the unprecedented publicity of having his painting re-created on the stage of the Pageant of the Masters in a specially added feature complete with living actors, live orchestration and biographical narration over a public address system nightly to a sell-out audience throughout July at Laguna's Irvine Bowl. Subsequently he was presented a life membership at the Laguna Beach Art Museum where he often exhibited. He won awards in and around California from such eminent artists as Paul Lauritz, Milford Zornes, Noel Quinn, Helen Wurdemann and Joe Magnani to name a few. He exhibited at Austin Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Among owners of Don's paintings are Amanda Blake of TV "Gunsmoke" series and Johnny Mercer, the noted songwriter."
