Good & Sturdy Art World Famous Crochet Museum Music Gallery News & Stuff Email, Comments, Flattery

These are the galleries of May, June and July 2010

Thank you Geoff Carter in Seattle, Washington, for blogging about my work in the Houston Chronicle.

i suggested a name change (to "ziggy:") for the 914 people on my good and sturdy art email list today. i am enjoying the comments. my new name for awhile is shelley tortelli, as given me by dave ("murdock") the bouncer at pappy and harriet's who also plays bass in my band, the kittens.

from carolann crandall in joshua tree: "Ha Ha...you made me smile, love ziggy"

from doug newman in los angeles: "Am I the only Ziggy? Can I be Ziggy for only one week - more or less a trial run?"

from nancy in kansas city: "not sure i like the name ziggy...just named my svelt and elegant Bengal kitten Talulah"

from nichole fromm in madison, wis: "Shari! I needed a gogo dance name. I think it's obvious now :)"

from teddy quinn in joshua tree, calif: "dear shell ( may i call you that?)-
i am so pleased to bear the names of two of my most favorite figures from the glam rock period (not a prehistoric era of man), as in "who needs TV when i got t. rex?" (marc bolan) as sung by mott the hoople , as per david bowie (aka ziggy stardust & therefore the other name i was talking about.) unless you mean ziggy marley, who is cool too.
lots of love,
t.rex ziggy quinn
ps to get to my house you go up a hill & then down one, too!!"

from constance walsh of pioneertown, calif: "Shari, I can't stand it !! I want I want I want more Sharis! I mean Shelley Tortellis !!
Thanks for keeping me on your gallery list, and doling out all those free smiles, hugs and feel-goods
with love
Ziggy
ps - good pick! this name has special memories for me ..."

from Lynn "ziggy" kilroy in santa monica: "Besides Ziggy Marley and Ziggy Stardust, I think about the cartoon Ziggy...the poor little guy for whom everything always went wrong, representing the "Ziggy" in all of us. Here's the description from Wikipedia that I thought you'd enjoy...especially the pets :)
Love,
Ziggy Kilroy
Ziggy is a small, bald, trouserless, barefoot, almost featureless character (save for his large nose) who seems to have no job, hobbies, or romantic partner, just a menagerie of pets: Fuzz, a small white dog; Sid, a cat afraid of mice; Josh, a discouraging parrot; Goldie, a fish; and Wack, a duck. The appeal of the cast is juxtaposed with the endless stream of misfortunes which befall Ziggy."

from jeffrey hoppa in nyc: "I would be honored to be Ziggy. As I age, becoming fatter and balder, I will come to resemble this beloved 1970's icon anyway, so I might as well have his name to go with!
I loved "Plan Ahead" and "This Too Shall Pass" BTW. Go Shelley, go!"

from steve winawer, here are directions to his house in california: "S, I guess we're not neighbors because those directions don't have anything to do with where I live. To get to my house you go straight for a long time then go left then make a quick right then stop. Rolldown your window and yell "ZIGGY." If I don't answer - I'm not home.
Chow,
S/Z"

from jill freeman in los angeles, calif: "Can I call you Shelliari?
Sounds like a cross between a pixie and a mafia boss, which, of course,
makes me think of you.
I love my worry dog! He is the BOMB!
Love
Zig

note from shari: "hey, i'm so grateful for all the silly friends i have, and they're all named ziggy!"

the art queen feral kitty, named inky sitting in the pinky sinky, she is the official goofball at art queen.

I had fun and met lots of lovely folks at Chef Tanya's birthday party at Native Foods in Palm Springs, California June 15. Lots of money went to the Palm Springs Animal Shelter.

here is the last cactus in my yard to bloom this spring, the purple cactus under my carport, i just love these happy flowers!

here is rainn wilson with kali, (to me she is the goddess of creation and destruction) i like rainn's hair, i am pretty sure kali was his hairdresser for this picture!

pussyfoot radio, here is a recent interview with pictures in the crochet museum, with ryan erskine, my studio assistant and band mate (we call our band "the kittens") who did the interview for me. (the crochet museum interview is at the end of the lively monthly internet radio show) click here to find the interview.

May 25: Today I am very grateful that there are 888 good and sturdy people on my art email list. Below are some comments i recieved about the number 888, after I did a little bit of looking into the numerology of it and found:

"Jesus, the resurrection, the baptism.
Symbol of the Redemption.
By its composition, this number is considered as perfect."

from Beth in Wisconsin: "I love the number 8 - on its side, it's the infinity symbol, looking right at it, it's a feminine shape."

from Gal Pal Val in Bellport, NY: "The number 8 is special to us ice skaters cuz we love to figure 8.... and it ryhmes with skate and doing GREAT ! 888 is just 3 x as good."

from Guy Hilyer in Madison, WI, "888 is palindromic, and it's a toll-free area code"

from Extremo the Clown in Portland, OR: "On 8-8-88, I had a local comic strip published in a weekly tabloid. It ran for 8 months."

from Max Daniels at Harvard in Boston: "Wow, congratulations on that awesome number! Probably it will be a lot
bigger by the end of the day :)"

from Gabby P in Los Angeles, CA: "the number 888 will always stay the same no matter how u move it around
even if u turn it upside down, cool, huh!?!"

May 6, 2010. I enjoyed the stuff I learned this week after sending my note on Thursday and mentioning I had just learned by watching a Viking Imax movie that Thursday is named after the Viking god of thunder, Thor (who according to Hans Riecke on Maui is also a germanic god). Says Hans:

"Thor was not only a Viking god but also the most feared and the principal god of the German tribes. Blitz und Donner (thunder) was the most feared and respected natural phenomenon which nobody could explain: Only a god could make such a fearsome and powerful spectacle.
I remember as a kid in Germany how often thunder and lightening (Donnerwetter) would last for hours many times in the summer, much more often than in Hawaii.

And Darin Johnson in California tells me:

"that's true, a lot of English words come from Nordic languages as well as Saxon, even names. They are similar to English. Like "berserk", a berserk was a Nordic warrior that they would give hallucinogenic mushrooms and dress them in bear skins and send them into combat. Those were probably the ones that were killing civilians. They were really fighting to re start trade that was stopped by the lords who were running things back then."

And Alicia Bay Laurel sent me a link today from derek sivers (creator of cdbaby, doing other things these days, like blogging) and his blog regarding Thor and Thursday, I really enjoyed Derek's blog. I just love synchronicities!

The World Famous Crochet Museum is featured on Pussyfoot radio this week. You can see pictures of the Crochet Museum and hear the interview in which Ryan Erskine was the spokesman for the museum, Bunny and I were busy sewing.

I had fun attending "Show and Tell" , The Art of Knowledge at the Zimmer Children's Museum last night in Los Angeles. It is free and open to the public. I donated "When the teacher is ready the students appear" (it sold on day 1 of the preview tours). Tours will continue to be available of the show until June 3.
